BRAMPTON, Ont. (April 11) — For the first time in several decades, there were eight teams represented at the 44th annual Sheridan Bruins Athletic Banquet as the men’s and women’s rugby teams joined their siblings from the basketball, soccer and volleyball teams. “This is always a very special evening,” athletic director Jim Flack said. “The way we started this night off, seeing just a huge group of student-athletes walk up to the stage as OCAA All-Academic winners, was tremendous. All of them have competed so hard on their respective fields and courts, and I take great joy in seeing that … Read more
BRAMPTON, Ont. (November 15) — While the first ever Sheridan Bruins men’s and women’s rugby seasons may have ended without a post-season berth, that didn’t preclude five individuals from picking up some hardware prior to the OCAA title games. Khadeisha Thompson was named the OCAA West Division and overall OCAA rookie of the year. Thompson started the season extremely raw, having just taken up rugby this past summer but became an impact player in a very short period. Sarah Llew-Williams and Shannon Paterson already had a slice of the Sheridan record books as they ended up as the first players … Read more
OAKVILLE, Ont. (October 28) — While their inaugural OCAA campaign ended the same way it began — with a lopsided loss to the West Division champions from Humber — it was clear that the Sheridan Bruins men’s rugby team (1-5 OCAA) had made massive strides as a unit since the beginning of the season. “I was really happy with the fact that these guys didn’t quit,” head coach Carlos Moniz said. “It was a cold day and we all knew the caliber of the team we were playing. We were definitely out-matched, there’s no question about that. So even though … Read more
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. (October 14) — One of the basic tenets of team sports is that even though the scoreboard dictates who wins and who loses, it doesn’t always reveal the entire story. So while the Sheridan Bruins men’s rugby team (1-4 OCAA) was on the wrong side of a 31-22 scoreboard against Conestoga, their effort and compete level was high for nearly the full 80 minutes, and provides empirical evidence as to how much development the team has undergone in their first two months of existence. “We’re proud of the guys; collectively we feel as though they’ve come a long way,” assistant … Read more
OAKVILLE, Ont. (October 4) — They may have trailed by 10 points on two separate occasions in the second half but thanks to a rally in the final half hour — capped by a converted try in the 78th minute — the Sheridan Bruins men’s rugby team (1-3 OCAA) picked up their first OCAA win, 19-15, over Mohawk. “It feels really good because the players now believe that they can win,” head coach Carlos Moniz said. “You can tell somebody something, but until they actually do it, they won’t believe that they can do it. So what was really important about … Read more
