BRAMPTON, Ont. (April 11) — For the first time in several decades, there were eight teams represented at the 44th annual Sheridan Bruins Athletic Banquet as the men’s and women’s rugby teams joined their siblings from the basketball, soccer and volleyball teams. “This is always a very special evening,” athletic director Jim Flack said. “The way we started this night off, seeing just a huge group of student-athletes walk up to the stage as OCAA All-Academic winners, was tremendous. All of them have competed so hard on their respective fields and courts, and I take great joy in seeing that … Read more
BRAMPTON, Ont. (November 15) — While the first ever Sheridan Bruins men’s and women’s rugby seasons may have ended without a post-season berth, that didn’t preclude five individuals from picking up some hardware prior to the OCAA title games. Khadeisha Thompson was named the OCAA West Division and overall OCAA rookie of the year. Thompson started the season extremely raw, having just taken up rugby this past summer but became an impact player in a very short period. Sarah Llew-Williams and Shannon Paterson already had a slice of the Sheridan record books as they ended up as the first players … Read more
OAKVILLE, Ont. (October 28) — Despite a brisk northernly wind and steady rainfall, the Sheridan Bruins women’s rugby team (2-4 OCAA) opened the final game of their inaugural season in strong fashion, scoring the first points of the year against Humber, but were unable to maintain that intensity for 80-minutes and fell 45-3. “I thought we played very well; we got off to a good start,” co-head coach Matt Piemontese said. “Our main weakness again was maintaining our tackles. We let them break through and that’s essentially how they scored a lot of their tries. That said, we’re happy with … Read more
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. (October 14) — After a quick start — scoring a try in the third minute — it looked as though the Sheridan Bruins women’s rugby team (2-3 OCAA) might be able to run away from Conestoga. While that didn’t quite happen, they were still in control for nearly the full 80 minutes and emerged with a 26-5 triumph, for their second straight win. “I thought we played probably our best game of the year,” co-head coach Matt Piemontese said. “We made one simple mistake the whole game and that was not getting down to the breakdown, right away. … Read more
OAKVILLE, Ont. (October 3) — They may have had modest goals entering their first season of existence, but the members of the Sheridan Bruins women’s rugby team (1-3 OCAA) can lay claim to the club’s first ever OCAA victory, scoring four tries in a 22-10 triumph over Mohawk. “It was great to have a first win in our very first season,” co-head coach Mike Curran said. “Out of the gates [this year] I thought we played really well against Seneca — we had two really, tight games with them. But it’s good to get a first win in the first … Read more
